Subsea Engineering Director

Elizabeth by admin

I am Director of a small engineering consultancy in Perth, I started with the company in 2003 as a riser engineer and will be celebrating 15 years with them this October! My workplace has a wonderful culture, which is one of the reasons I have stayed with the same company for so long.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor in Business Administration.

The company I work for design risers. Risers are a pipe that transport oil and gas from the seabed to a vessel floating on the waters surface, you can think about them like a long piece of spaghetti.

They are interesting structures to work with because they are exposed to a lot of movement from wind, waves, currents and vessel motions. This makes them very challenging to design in terms of what materials, size and arrangement you select to ensure they can stay in the water for over 20 years.

Taking risks can bring the greatest rewards – my husband and I decided to leave Houston and uproot our life to move to Perth. We really had no reason to leave as all our family and friends were nearby and we both had great jobs. We did it for the opportunity and it has brought us great reward.

My career has progressed much faster and we love the life style that living in Perth offers. Since we have lived in Perth we have grown our family.

At the time of filming the wavemaker project I was 6 months pregnant with our second son. I think it is important for young girls to realise you can have both a fulfilling career and family life.

As director of a small engineering consultancy I get to be involved in business development, technical project management, training and mentoring, hiring, strategic planning, financial and business administration aspects of running a small office.

Choosing engineering can lead you to a career where you can apply both technical and business management skills, it can be a great balance for those that are interested in continuing their technical learning while also getting exposure to other aspects of the industry.

If you have a passion for maths and science follow it, choosing the subsea engineering world will offer amazing opportunities for continued learning and an exciting career path.
